General Membership Meeting, January 26, 2019

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, Knowles Hall, St. Augustine


Call to Order

President Jacquelyn Lally called the General Membership Meeting to order in Knowles Hall on January 26, 2019 at 12: 45 pm.


Total of 32 members present.


President’s Report:

Summary of Events Fall 2017-Jan 2019

  • Bake Sales at Football Games

Concerns: Board members are always volunteering - we are not getting enough volunteers to help with bake sale, special events for visiting teams, and such.

New Fees 2020:

$20 for a single membership and $30 for a couple. Associate membership is the same. As approved by the board members on January 29, 2017.


501c3 status: It is on hold - Funds need to be raised in order to become a 501c3


*Jimmy Young volunteered to donate $$ to FSDAA to help with getting our 501c3 status - which will help save us a lot of money by being recognized as a non-profit organization - Mel will follow up on that - THANK YOU Jimmy!*


Bob McMahon suggested to indicate past holdings for scholarship funds on the reports.


The members have approved the treasurer's report.

Reorganizing FSDAA website

FSDAA Facebook Page - a glitch happening - Jerry is working with Facebook to get it up and running.

Committee’s Reports


“BP” Murphy, Hall of Fame

Chair: Bob McMahon FSD ‘70 Committees: BP Murphy FSD ‘83

Need people to join in: female, male, POC alumni, alumni, secretary


Hall of Fame will focus on:

  • Sports (athletic, coach, manager, fan, etc..)

  • Artists (dancer, painter, sculptor, musician, etc.

  • Educators (teachers, professor, administrator)

  • Leaders in recognized organizations (NAD, FAD, FSDAA, etc..)

  • Civic Services (local, state or federal government)


What kind of criteria do you want for HOF? Need to be discussed in committee meeting

  • FSD Student

  • FSD Alumni

  • FSDB staff, teachers, coach, administrators - add that as well?


Logistics for HOF:

  • By-Laws must be completed first, then FSDAA board approve.

  • Set up timeline

  • How often ? every one or two years.

  • Committee: 1 chair and 4 - 6 members (must be FSDAA paid members)

  • Nomination proceeding - 3 to 6 months

  • HOF committee vote on those nominees (meet 2 to 4 times a year)

  • How many inductees per term

  • Expenses (awards, materials, special event)

  • Event committees


Jacquelyn Lally, Scholarships:

Sammy Vital and Quintin Galpine were awarded the scholarship of $500 each - they are now at Gallaudet.


Sallie Collins, Picnic Event:

Wekiwa Springs State Park 1800 Wekiwa Cir. Apopka, FL. 32712

8am to Dusk $6 per Vehicle


They offer the following: Bike, Trails ,Swimming, Pavilion, Restroom Snorkeling, Camping,Pets allowed, Fishing,Playground, and Parking


Date of our picnic will be forthcoming.

Tammy Pellicer and Kwanza Granger, Fundraising:

Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser (Kwanza - Jacquelyn spoke on her behalf)

  • May 19, 2018 we sold 21 meals that Saturday

  • Raised total $527.40 that day but profited $339.40

  • Small group of people attended

Local Restaurant Fundraisers (Tammy)

  • Wants to send letters to different restaurants/ bars to help with donating money.

  • Not neccesarily have it here in St. Augustine - would like for other members to help out and do a fundraising night at their local eatery.



The members have accepted all of the reports.


OLD BUSINESS:

Raising the Dues for Membership Last General Meeting, deferred to the Board to decide by Richard Malcolm New Membership fees starting Fall 2020

$20 single member $30 couples Same fees apply to Associate members (single and couples)


It was agreed by all of the members to increase the fee.

NEW BUSINESS


Motion #1: Bob McMahon moved to put a timeline limit on the scholarship awards up to 2 years. After 2 years, the monetary award will be forfeited. Seconded by Allison Harvey Schuler. PASSED.


Motion #2: Mary Rogers moved to set the date to host the Hall of Fame in 2020. Seconded by Richard Malcolm.

Amendment to Motion #2: Jimmy Young moved that this discussion and final decision about the dates for the HOF should be referred to the Hall of Fame committee members. Seconded by Tammy Pellicer. PASSED.


Motion #3: Bob McMahon moved to accept Richard Malcolm to be a committee member of the Hall of Fame. Seconded by Jimmy Young.

Amendment to Motion #3: Missy Kaler moved that we allow Bob McMahon who is our Hall of Fame chairperson to pick the committee members and have it approved by the FSDAA Board Members. Seconded by Mel Goodall. PASSED.


Motion #4: Mel Goodall moved to have Bob McMahon and “BP” Murphy to have all of their committee members picked out for the Hall of Fame by May 31st, 2019. Seconded by Jimmy Young. PASSED.


Motion #5: Senette Jenkins moved to nominate Tammy Newsome Pellicer to be our Vice President. Seconded by Sallie Collins. PASSED.


Motion #6: Mary Rogers moved to appoint Jamie McElfresh as our Hall of Fame Banquet Chairperson. Seconded by Richard Malcolm. PASSED.


Motion #7: Mel Goodall moved that Jerry Jenkins become our official webmaster and add to this title of webmaster to our bylaws. Seconded by Senette Jenkins. PASSED.


Motion #8: Tammy Newsome Pellicer moved to accept Patricia Spalding as our Member-at-Large (MAL). Seconded by Mel Goodall. PASSED.


Motion #9: Tammy Newsome Pellicer moved to accept Senette Jenkins as our Member-at-Large (MAL). Seconded by Allison Schuler. PASSED.


Motion #10: Tom Burns moved to close the new business. Seconded by Sallie Collins. PASSED.


ANNOUNCEMENTS:


Mary Burns:

Prior to starting the meeting, Mary announced that she has a collection of items to donate to the FSD Museum. She made a book honoring all of the Florida State Deaf Pageant - from 1967 to 2011. She donated the book to the FSD Museum. She also donated the following:

  • FSDB Jersey jacket

  • Graduation Hat

  • Dress from when she was in the pageant.

Drawing:

A wreath was made and donated by Cathy Essex, a mother of 5 Deaf children. Three of them are students of FSDB. Patricia Spalding won the drawing.


The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 pm.
